Police Seek Public Assistance in Identifying Suspect in Hate-Motivated Transit Assault

Toronto Police have launched a public appeal for information to help identify a man wanted in connection with a suspected hate-motivated attack against a Muslim woman on a public transit bus in Scarborough. The disturbing incident occurred last week and has sparked outrage within the community.

Incident Details and Video Evidence

The assault took place on Monday, April 13, at approximately 3:30 p.m. on a Durham Region Transit bus near the intersection of Progress and Milner Avenues. According to police statements released Friday night, the suspect approached the victim while on the bus, made several derogatory and anti-Muslim comments, and then physically assaulted her before exiting the vehicle.

Video footage of the incident, shared on social media platform X by the National Council of Canadian Muslims, shows a crowded bus where a man can be heard shouting profanity-laced, anti-Muslim remarks. In the censored video, the man appears to shout, "This f—ing terror f—s" and "What the f— you looking at me for?"

The footage shows a man holding a cellphone entering the frame from the left and stomping near the legs or feet of the person recording the video, who according to the NCCM post was a Muslim woman wearing a hijab. It remains unclear from the video whether the man's kick actually made contact with the woman.

Victim Response and Community Reaction

In the video, a woman believed to be the person recording can be heard confronting the assailant, saying, "What the f— is wrong with you? You don't want to hit girls because we're Muslim? F— you, go to hell." She continues, "You need to learn that if you can't respect people, you sit quietly. If you can't sit quietly, then get off the bus."

The National Council of Canadian Muslims expressed outrage about the incident in their social media post, stating, "We are outraged by a recent incident of Islamophobia that occurred on the Durham Transit. A hijabi women travelling between Scarborough and Ajax was allegedly both verbally and physically assaulted."

Police Investigation and Suspect Description

The Toronto Police Hate Crime Unit has taken over the investigation. Authorities confirm that the victim sustained minor injuries and that the victim and suspect were not known to each other prior to the incident.

Police have released images of the suspect and provided the following description:

  • Male, 30 to 40 years old
  • Heavy build
  • Last seen wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, and a camouflage baseball hat with a Canada logo
