A routine traffic stop for speeding on a northern Ontario highway escalated into a significant drug bust last week, leading to multiple criminal charges.
Traffic Violation Uncovers Alleged Drug Operation
On Friday, December 13, 2025, an officer from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) pulled over a vehicle for speeding on Highway 11 in Powassan. During the interaction, the officer developed grounds to investigate further, which led to a search of the vehicle.
The subsequent search uncovered a quantity of what police believe to be cocaine and oxycodone tablets, along with cannabis. Officers also seized a digital scale and multiple cellphones, items often associated with drug trafficking operations.
Charges Laid Following Investigation
As a result of the discovery, a 39-year-old man from North Bay, Ontario, was arrested at the scene. He now faces serious charges under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
The accused has been charged with:
- Possession of a Schedule I substance (cocaine) for the purpose of trafficking.
- Possession of a Schedule I substance (oxycodone) for the purpose of trafficking.
- Possession of a Schedule II substance (cannabis) for the purpose of selling.
The man was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on January 28, 2026.
OPP Emphasizes Proactive Road Safety Efforts
This incident highlights how proactive traffic enforcement can lead to the interception of more serious criminal activity. The OPP consistently monitors provincial highways not only for traffic safety but also as a line of defense against the inter-community transportation of illegal drugs.
The seizure removes a quantity of dangerous and addictive substances from circulation in the region. Police have not released the exact weight or street value of the drugs confiscated, indicating the investigation may be ongoing.
The accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The OPP's North Bay detachment continues its investigation into the origins and intended destination of the seized narcotics.
