Son charged with murder after domestic incident in Deer Run

Calgary police have formally laid a charge of second-degree murder against a 37-year-old man in connection with a fatal domestic disturbance earlier this week in the southeast community of Deer Run.

Charges Laid Following Sunday Night Disturbance

Robert Durand, aged 37, now faces a single count of second-degree murder. He is scheduled for a court appearance on Friday. The charge stems from a violent incident that occurred on Sunday, December 15, 2025.

Police were summoned to a residence on the 200 block of Deer Park Place S.E. shortly before 10 p.m. after receiving reports of a disturbance. Upon arrival, officers discovered a man in his 70s suffering from severe, life-threatening injuries.

Victim Succumbs to Injuries, Suspect Arrested

The elderly victim was rushed to a local hospital but later died as a result of his injuries. In the hours following the incident, investigators located and arrested a male suspect in his 30s in the 100 block of 9th Avenue S.W. in downtown Calgary.

Authorities have since confirmed a critical detail about the relationship between those involved. The accused is the son of the deceased victim, marking the tragedy as a domestic homicide.

Investigation Details and Appeal for Information

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner completed an autopsy on the victim on Wednesday, December 18. Out of respect for the family's privacy during this difficult time, police have stated they will not be publicly releasing the name of the victim.

As part of their investigation, which included a forensic examination of the scene, officers recovered a knife. The investigation remains active as police work to piece together the full sequence of events.
