SIU Dismisses Woman's Broken Nose Complaint Against York Police
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has concluded its investigation into an incident where a woman sustained a broken nose during an arrest by York Regional Police on January 1, 2026. Director Joseph Martino announced that no criminal charges will be filed against the officers involved.
The incident occurred in the early hours of New Year's Day when officers responded to a call. The woman, whose identity has not been released, alleged that her nose was broken during the arrest. However, after a thorough review of evidence, including witness statements and video footage, the SIU determined that the officers' actions were lawful and reasonable under the circumstances.
Martino stated, 'There is no reasonable grounds to believe that any officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the woman's injury.' The SIU is an independent agency that investigates incidents involving police that result in serious injury, death, or allegations of sexual assault.
The woman's lawyer expressed disappointment with the decision, stating that they are considering legal options. This case has sparked discussions about police accountability and the use of force in Ontario.
