York Regional Police have issued a public appeal for witnesses following two attempted arson incidents that occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, February 11, 2026. Authorities believe the events in Markham and Whitchurch-Stouffville are connected and are actively seeking information from the community.
Incident Details and Timeline
The first incident took place at approximately 2:00 a.m. in a plaza located near Highway 7 East and Ninth Line in Markham. According to police reports, two suspects were observed smashing into businesses within the plaza and attempting to ignite a fire using an accelerant. The suspects subsequently fled the scene eastbound on Highway 7.
Police indicate that the individuals arrived at the location in a white Audi SUV, which was later spotted at a second plaza near Ringwood Drive and Main Street in Whitchurch-Stouffville around 3:30 a.m. At this location, two suspects were again seen breaking the front door of a business and trying to start a fire with an accelerant.
Suspect Descriptions and Vehicle Information
Investigators are seeking at least three suspects in connection with these incidents. The driver of the Audi SUV did not exit the vehicle at either location and remains unidentified. Descriptions of the two suspects who were seen outside the vehicle have been released by police.
- The first suspect was wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt, track pants, white shoes, and grey gloves.
- The second suspect was described as wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, black pants, black shoes, and white gloves.
