Durham Police Helicopter Nabs Suspect Fleeing RIDE Checkpoint on Foot
Police chopper locates man fleeing RIDE spotcheck in Durham

A police helicopter proved its worth this week in Durham Region, swiftly locating a man who allegedly abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot from a roadside impaired driving check.

Suspect Abandons Car at Fire Hall

The incident began when a driver reportedly attempted to avoid a RIDE spotcheck in Newcastle, located north of Toronto. Police allege the motorist then drove to a nearby fire station and left the car behind.

The vehicle was found abandoned at Clarington Fire Station No. 2 on King Avenue West, just east of Highway 35/115 and north of Highway 401.

Eyes in the Sky Make Quick Work of Search

After the car was discovered, Durham Regional Police's AIR 1 helicopter was deployed. In a display of aerial efficiency, the crew located a suspect in a green space south of the firehall in roughly 90 seconds.

The search area was behind the Diane Hamre Recreation Centre off Rudell Road. Aerial video released by authorities shows the man lying on the ground in an apparent attempt to hide from officers who were being directed to his location.

Surrender and Charges

Approximately a minute after being spotted from the air, the suspect surrendered. He was seen walking across a wooden bridge with his arms raised, near the parking lot for St. Francis of Assisi Elementary School. He was taken into custody without further incident.

The accused has been identified as Enrique Scott Williamson, 26, of St. Catharines. He now faces a series of charges, which include:

  • Obstruction of a peace officer
  • Possession of cocaine
  • Driving while under suspension
  • Breach of probation
