Ottawa police have accused a local taekwondo coach of sexual assault following an investigation that began earlier this year. The allegations involve a minor, and the coach has been released on conditions pending a court appearance.
Details of the Case
The Ottawa Police Service announced on Wednesday that they have charged a 35-year-old man, who is a taekwondo instructor at a martial arts studio in the city, with one count of sexual assault. The charges stem from an incident that allegedly occurred between January and February 2026. The victim, a minor, came forward to police, prompting an investigation.
Police say the accused was known to the victim through his role as a coach. The identity of the accused has not been released to protect the identity of the victim. The coach was arrested on May 13 and released on an undertaking with conditions, including not to communicate with the victim or attend any place where minors are present.
Police Statement
In a statement, Detective Constable Sarah Johnson of the Ottawa Police Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Unit said, "We take all allegations of sexual assault seriously, especially those involving vulnerable individuals. We encourage anyone who has experienced sexual violence to come forward and report it."
The investigation is ongoing, and police are asking anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
Impact on the Community
The news has shocked parents and students at the taekwondo studio. One parent, who wished to remain anonymous, said, "It's devastating. You trust these coaches with your children. We hope justice is served." The studio has not commented on the matter.
This case highlights the importance of safeguarding in youth sports. Organizations are urged to implement strict background checks and reporting mechanisms.
