Oshawa Man Arrested in Connection with Peterborough Shooting While Under Court-Ordered Firearm Prohibition

A 23-year-old Oshawa man has been arrested in connection with a shooting in Peterborough earlier this month, despite being under a court order that explicitly prohibited him from possessing any weapons. The arrest highlights a serious breach of legal restrictions aimed at preventing firearm-related violence.

Details of the Arrest and Prohibition Order

Chevron “Chevy” Millwood was bound by a prohibition order issued in 2024, which forbade him from possessing firearms, crossbows, restricted weapons, ammunition, and explosive substances for a period of 10 years. Additionally, he was barred for life from possessing any prohibited or restricted firearms, weapons, devices, or ammunition. This order was intended to curb his access to dangerous items following prior convictions, including armed robbery involving a firearm.

On Wednesday, around 9:30 p.m., officers from the Peterborough Police Service Investigative Services Unit, assisted by the Durham Regional Police Service Tactical Response Team, executed a search warrant at a residence in the Simcoe St. S. and Wellington Rd. area of Oshawa. During the operation, Millwood was arrested, and officers allegedly seized a loaded gun from his belongings.

Incident Background and Charges

The shooting occurred on March 8 around 4 p.m., when police were called to an apartment at 701 George St. N. in Peterborough after reports of gunfire. Investigation revealed that the incident was linked to the drug subculture, involving a robbery where a Peterborough couple were targeted. During a physical confrontation, a 39-year-old woman was shot and seriously injured, requiring airlift to a Toronto hospital for treatment. A 47-year-old man present at the scene was not harmed.

Millwood now faces multiple charges, including:

  • Two counts of attempted murder using a firearm
  • Robbery using a firearm
  • Unauthorized possession of a weapon
  • Several other weapons-related offenses

Police Response and Ongoing Investigation

Peterborough Police Chief Stuart Betts commended the investigative team for their diligent work over the past week and a half, stating, “I am very proud of the work of our Investigative team... The long hours and thoroughness of the investigation has resulted in the arrest of the person believed to have used the firearm in our community, compromising the safety of our residents.” He emphasized that Millwood should be held in custody due to his prior conviction and the severity of the current allegations.

The police are still searching for a second suspect described as a skinny Black male wearing a black jacket, grey hoodie with the hood up, grey toque, grey backpack, and black shoes with blue soles. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Peterborough Police at 705-876-1122, ext. 555, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

This case underscores ongoing challenges in enforcing firearm prohibitions and addressing gun violence in communities, particularly when individuals with criminal histories continue to access weapons illegally. The victim is reportedly recovering from her injuries, but the incident has raised concerns about public safety and the effectiveness of existing legal measures.
