A pre-sentence report has been ordered to examine the history of Oliver Chaske, who pleaded guilty to seven offences in Regina's Court of King's Bench on April 27. Lawyers anticipate presenting a joint submission on sentencing.
Details of the Incident
On February 5, 2023, a man emerged onto the 700 block of Regina's Princess Street, badly beaten and bleeding. He had been held captive in a basement, where he was accused of being a "white pedophile who comes to the hood to rape young native girls." He was tied up, gagged, and repeatedly bludgeoned with the butt end of a gun. The victim eventually passed out and escaped when his captors were absent, seeking help from a neighbor who called 911.
Guilty Pleas and Charges
Oliver Chaske, 38, admitted to the facts and pleaded guilty to seven charges: robbery, kidnapping, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, being unlawfully at large, intimidation of justice system participants, and obstruction of justice. The facts were read into the record by Crown prosecutor David Belanger.
Chaske was on parole in December 2022 but failed to check in at a halfway house, making him unlawfully at large. On February 4, 2023, he encountered the victim at a gas station in Regina's North Central neighborhood. The two knew each other from a previous firearm transaction. Chaske jumped into the victim's truck and directed him to follow an SUV to Princess Street, where an accomplice pointed a gun at the victim. Chaske claimed the victim owed him money and took the truck as payment.
Assault and Injuries
The victim was dragged into a home, and a gun went off during the process, though he was not injured by the discharge. While captive, he sustained serious injuries: head and face lacerations, a sliced ear, a split lip, large wounds on his forehead and top of his head, and multiple brain bleeds. A woman told police she had a video conversation with Chaske showing the victim covered in blood, without pants, curled in a ball with bulging eyes. Chaske claimed they had caught the man engaging in human trafficking. The woman also heard another man ask the victim, "Why don't I just shoot you?"
