The Mission RCMP has issued a public safety warning and is coordinating with local social service agencies following two separate attempted abductions of vulnerable women within a 24-hour period. Police are urging heightened caution and awareness in the community.
Details of the Disturbing Incidents
According to Mission RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Harrison Mohr, the first incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, December 15. A woman was walking along Logan Avenue sometime between 11 p.m. on Sunday, December 14, and 1 a.m. on Monday when a white SUV pulled up beside her.
The driver, described as a South Asian male, allegedly asked the woman to perform a sexual act. After she refused and walked away, the man exited his vehicle, assaulted her, and tried to pull her toward the SUV. When the victim managed to break free and run, the suspect followed in his vehicle and reportedly used bear spray against her. She escaped without sustaining serious physical injuries.
The second attempt happened later that same day, around 6:30 p.m. on Monday, in the area of 3rd Avenue between Murray Street and Horne Street. Another woman approached a bystander for help, reporting that a South Asian man in a white SUV had similarly asked her for a sexual act and then attempted to drag her toward his vehicle. She also escaped without serious injury but left the scene before police arrived. Officers have not yet been able to locate her for a full statement.
Police Action and Community Warning
Cpl. Mohr confirmed that both women were from vulnerable sectors of the community. In response, the Mission RCMP has proactively contacted social service providers who interact with at-risk populations, asking them to warn their clients about these incidents.
"Social service providers who interact with vulnerable populations have been asked to ensure their clients are aware of these incidents, and to encourage anyone who has had similar encounters to immediately report it to police," Mohr stated.
The police are actively investigating and seeking any additional victims or witnesses. They emphasize the importance of reporting any suspicious interactions immediately.
Suspect Description and Public Appeal
The suspect in both cases is described as:
- A South Asian male
- Approximately six feet tall
- Has a beard and short hair
- Has tattoos on his arms
- Driving a white SUV
The Mission RCMP is urging anyone with information about these incidents, or who may have experienced a similar encounter, to contact them immediately. The safety of vulnerable community members is a paramount concern, and public vigilance is considered crucial while the suspect remains at large.
