Edmonton Police Seek Public Help in Nine-Year Missing Person Case
An Edmonton man who vanished nearly a decade ago may be living unhoused in the city's extensive river valley system, according to a recent police investigation that has taken several unexpected turns. Jeffrey Caporale, 68, was officially reported missing in 2017 by both the Edmonton Police Service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, but new developments suggest he might have been living under different circumstances than initially suspected.
Recent Sighting and Ongoing Investigation
In March 2026, Edmonton police officers encountered a man identifying himself as Jeff Caporale during an interaction at Groat Road and 102 Avenue. The officers did not immediately recognize the potential significance of the encounter, realizing only later that they might have been speaking with the long-missing individual. This development prompted Edmonton police to issue a formal news release last week, seeking additional information from the public to help resolve the nine-year mystery.
"To date, efforts to locate Jeffrey have been unsuccessful and the EPS is now issuing a media release with images taken from the recent interaction," stated the official police release. The authorities have distributed photographs captured during the March encounter in hopes that members of the public might provide crucial leads.
Physical Description and Possible Locations
Caporale stands approximately five feet five inches tall and weighs around 150 pounds. He has distinctive physical characteristics including a surgical scar on the left side of his chest, baldness, and light blue eyes. Police believe he may currently be residing without permanent shelter in various locations within Edmonton's river valley, with specific attention on the Victoria Park area.
The investigation has revealed that Caporale was previously believed to be using an alias identified as 'Rob McKinney' around the time of his disappearance. In April 2020, as pandemic restrictions began affecting communities, a family member filed another missing person report with Edmonton police, renewing attention on the case.
Background as Christian Magazine Publisher
Before his disappearance, Jeffrey Caporale was known as the publisher of Living Light News magazine, a bi-monthly evangelical Christian publication that described itself as "an award-winning evangelical Christian lifestyles newspaper featuring news, sports and entertainment which glorifies God and shares the Gospel message." The magazine claimed a circulation of 80,000 copies and maintained an office in Edmonton's Mill Woods neighborhood.
Around 2015-2016, the publication advertised on freelance writing platforms, offering payment of ten cents per word at a time when finding paying freelance opportunities presented significant challenges for writers. By 2016, the magazine specifically sought stories about Christians who had achieved fame as personalities and celebrities.
Former Associate Confirms Identity
Brian Hahn, who previously worked as a sales manager for Living Light News, confirmed the identity of the individual in the police photographs. "That's definitely him in the picture, in the snow, absolutely," Hahn stated unequivocally when shown the images captured by officers.
Hahn remembered Caporale as a spiritually-oriented individual who was actively involved in his church community and maintained a residence in Edmonton's Jasper Place neighborhood. Their last encounter occurred in 2015 at a restaurant in Leduc, where Caporale was dining with friends. During that meeting, Caporale mentioned he was transitioning away from magazine publishing and pursuing a "different direction" in his life.
The Edmonton Police Service continues to investigate all leads and encourages anyone with information about Jeffrey Caporale's whereabouts or recent activities to contact authorities immediately.
