A man was fatally shot by Toronto police officers early Saturday morning at the Danforth GO station following reports of an individual armed with a firearm. The province's Special Investigations Unit has taken over the case.
Deadly Confrontation Unfolds Early Saturday
The incident began just after 1:40 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2025, when Toronto Police responded to calls about a person with a gun at the GO station located near Danforth Avenue and Main Street. Officers located a male suspect in a stairwell leading to a train platform.
"There was an interaction and one officer discharged his firearm at the man multiple times," SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon told reporters at the scene. The victim, who has not been publicly identified, sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead.
SIU Assumes Investigation, Evidence Collected
The Special Investigations Unit, Ontario's police watchdog, was immediately invoked. Hudon confirmed that investigators collected two firearms from the scene: the service weapon from the officer who fired and another firearm believed to have been in the possession of the deceased man.
The SIU has designated one subject officer and four witness officers. Investigators will be reviewing multiple sources of video evidence. "Our understanding is that there is CCTV footage that shows what happened, as well as Toronto Police body-worn camera footage, which we will also be collecting," Hudon stated.
Service Disruption and Police Association Statement
In the wake of the shooting, Metrolinx advised that trains would bypass the Danforth GO station until further notice, disrupting weekend transit service.
The Toronto Police Association (TPA) issued a statement on social media platform X, noting that President Clayton Campbell and Director Ron Tait attended the scene to support the involved members. "No police officer starts their shift wanting or intending to use force," the TPA statement read. "But when the public calls, they respond to dangerous, unpredictable situations and make split second decisions in order to keep everyone safe, including themselves." The association pledged to support its members throughout the SIU process.
Police have declined to provide further details as the investigation by the SIU continues.
