A 38-year-old man is facing numerous charges, including breaching probation, after allegedly stealing a school bus in Ajax while impaired and then crashing it into a McDonald's drive-thru barrier.
Incident Details
On Monday around 11:30 p.m., Durham Regional Police responded to an impaired driving call in the area of Taunton Road West and Westney Road North. Officers had received reports of a shortened school bus driving erratically before the driver attempted to pull into a McDonald's drive-thru and collided with the barrier.
Police arrived on scene and successfully stopped the vehicle. They allege the driver showed signs of impairment and was taken into custody without incident.
Investigation Findings
Upon further investigation, officers determined that the school bus had sustained exterior damage and had been entered unlawfully while in a bus yard in North York. The bus was stolen, and police believe it may have collided with other parked unoccupied buses during the getaway. Additionally, radios and keys to other vehicles in the yard were stolen at the time.
Police also allege that during the investigation, the suspect provided officers with a false name. He was subsequently identified and charged.
Charges Laid
Tanner Jon Davis, of no fixed address, faces charges including:
- Impaired operation
- Impaired operation – exceed
- Two counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
- Obstruct police
- Three counts of breach probation
