Firearm Uncovered During Routine Windsor Traffic Stop

A 22-year-old man is confronting serious criminal charges after officers from the Windsor Police Service discovered a loaded handgun during what began as a standard traffic stop last week.

Details of the Thursday Morning Incident

The event unfolded in the early hours of Thursday morning, at approximately 2:15 a.m. A police officer initiated a stop on a vehicle observed travelling at a high rate of speed and, notably, without functioning rear lights in the vicinity of Aylmer Avenue and Riverside Drive East.

Upon interacting with the driver, the officer quickly determined that the man operating the vehicle was doing so with a suspended driver's licence. This discovery prompted a more thorough investigation of the automobile.

Discovery of the Loaded Weapon and Ammunition

A subsequent search of the vehicle led to a significant find: a loaded handgun concealed beneath the driver's seat. Police confirmed that the firearm was loaded with three live cartridges and two spent casings, indicating potential prior use.

Officers also seized additional ammunition from the scene. This included three .32-calibre rimfire cartridges and two more spent .32-calibre cartridges.

The suspect was arrested at the scene without incident, ensuring the safety of both the public and the responding officers.

Charges and a Broader Warning from Police

The 22-year-old motorist now faces multiple criminal charges. These include possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace and the transportation of a firearm in contravention of regulations.

In light of the event, the Windsor Police Service issued a stark reminder to the public. A spokesperson emphasized that firearms and ammunition in vehicles present a serious safety risk. They noted that even small-calibre weapons are capable of causing severe injury or death, and their presence escalates the potential for violence, endangering both citizens and law enforcement personnel.

This incident is not isolated. Last month, Windsor police also seized a loaded .22 calibre pistol, along with fentanyl and counterfeit currency, from a suspect on Huron Church Road following an investigation into firearms-related activity.

Authorities are asking anyone with information related to this case or other illegal firearms activity to contact the Windsor police drugs and guns unit at 519-255-6700 ext. 4361. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 519-258-8477 or online at catchcrooks.com.
