LONDON, Ont. — Use of force officers are testifying at a coroner's inquest this week into the death of Justin Bourassa, a Sarnia man who was shot and killed by police in 2021.
Bourassa, 32, died on October 28, 2021, following an encounter with officers from the London Police Service. The province is now investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
The inquest, which began earlier this week, is examining the actions of the officers involved and the use of force that led to the fatal shooting. Testimony from use of force experts is expected to shed light on the training and protocols followed by the officers at the scene.
Bourassa's family has been present throughout the proceedings, seeking answers about the events that led to his death. The inquest is expected to continue for several more days, with additional witnesses and evidence to be presented.
The London Police Service has declined to comment, citing the ongoing inquest. The province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has also been involved in reviewing the case.
