Foreign Nationals Charged with Firearms Offenses Following Surrey Shooting

Two foreign nationals are now facing serious firearms charges after a shooting incident that occurred in the early morning hours in Surrey, British Columbia. The arrests were made by officers who were specifically patrolling neighborhoods that have been targeted by extortion-related shootings as part of a police initiative known as Project Assurance.

Early Morning Arrests Following Gunshot Reports

At approximately 3:50 a.m. on Monday, officers from the specialized patrol unit heard what they described as a gunshot in the vicinity of 129th Street and 84th Avenue. These officers have been assigned to monitor areas where businesses and residents have been subjected to extortion attempts and associated violence.

The responding officers quickly identified and stopped a vehicle in the area, subsequently arresting both the driver and a passenger. During the arrest procedure, law enforcement discovered and seized a loaded handgun from the vehicle.

Charges Laid Against Two Individuals

Staff Sergeant Lindsey Houghton confirmed the details in a news release issued on Tuesday, stating that the major crime section has taken over the investigation. Charges have now been formally laid against two men in connection with the incident.

Harshdeep Singh, aged 20, faces two criminal charges:

  • One count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • One count of occupying a vehicle knowing a firearm is present

Hanspreet Singh, aged 21, has been charged with:

  • One count of occupying a vehicle knowing a firearm is present

Ongoing Investigation and Legal Proceedings

The investigation remains active, with Houghton indicating that additional charges may be forthcoming as police continue their work on the case. Both individuals are currently being held in custody with a scheduled court appearance set for Friday.

Due to their status as foreign nationals, the Surrey Police Service has initiated contact with the Canada Border Services Agency regarding the case. This coordination between law enforcement agencies highlights the complex jurisdictional considerations involved when non-citizens face criminal charges in Canada.

Community Context and Police Response

This incident occurs against the backdrop of ongoing concerns about extortion-related violence in Surrey and surrounding areas. Project Assurance represents a targeted police response to these specific criminal activities, with officers maintaining increased visibility in affected neighborhoods.

Police are continuing to seek information from the public regarding this incident. Authorities have requested that anyone with relevant details, including security camera footage or dashcam recordings from the area, contact the Surrey Police Service non-emergency line at 604-599-0502.

The case underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in addressing gun violence while implementing specialized initiatives like Project Assurance to protect communities from targeted criminal activities.
