Edmonton Homicide Count Reaches 24 After Fatal Stabbing, 25-Year-Old Charged
Edmonton's 24th homicide of year after fatal stabbing

Edmonton police have confirmed the city's 24th homicide of the year following a violent incident in a northeast home that left a young man dead and a woman with life-threatening injuries.

Charges Laid in Northeast Edmonton Tragedy

Wesley Poon, a 25-year-old man, now faces serious charges including second-degree murder, attempted murder, and arson endangering life. The charges stem from an event on the evening of Saturday, November 29th, which resulted in the death of 22-year-old Jeremy Poon and serious injuries to a 53-year-old woman.

Police were called to the area of 160A Avenue and 83 Street just after 8:40 p.m. that night for a weapons complaint. Upon arrival, officers discovered the grim scene: the 22-year-old man was deceased, and the woman was found with critical injuries. A 25-year-old man was arrested at the location.

Autopsy Reveals Cause of Death

An autopsy conducted on December 1st determined that Jeremy Poon died from multiple stab wounds, leading the medical examiner to officially rule the death a homicide. The 53-year-old woman, who was also attacked, remains hospitalized as she recovers from her injuries.

Investigators have stated that the male suspect, the injured woman, and the deceased man were all known to each other, though the precise nature of their relationships has not been publicly disclosed. Homicide detectives have taken over the investigation.

Edmonton's Homicide Trends and a Separate Case Closed

This incident marks a somber milestone for Alberta's capital. With 24 homicides so far this year, Edmonton's total is tracking similarly to the numbers seen in 2018 (29) and 2019 (27). The city recorded 33 homicides in 2022 and 41 in 2023.

In a related update, Edmonton Police Service has concluded its investigation into another recent death. The case involved 28-year-old Ermiya Zerzghi, who was found dead during a welfare check at a northwest Edmonton home on November 23rd. An autopsy determined he died from blunt head and neck trauma, and his death was also ruled a homicide.

However, police announced they will not be laying charges in Zerzghi's death because the suspect in that case has since died. Detectives are not seeking any other suspects, and the file is now closed.

Police have not released details regarding Wesley Poon's upcoming court appearances. The community now grapples with the impact of this violence as the year draws to a close.
