Edmonton Police Charge Three in Online Marketplace Robbery Series, Warn of Ongoing Threat

Edmonton Police have announced charges against three suspects in relation to a string of online marketplace robberies that may still be active, urging Edmontonians to remain vigilant when arranging meetings through platforms such as Kijiji and Facebook Marketplace.

Details of the Robbery Series

According to a Tuesday news release from the Edmonton Police Service (EPS), approximately 15 reports of personal robberies have been filed over the past month, all linked to sales on Kijiji and Facebook Marketplace. In each incident, the suspect would pose as a buyer interested in high-value items like cell phones and brand-name clothing. During the meet-up, while inspecting the merchandise, the suspect would be joined by at least one accomplice. The group would then rob the seller using threats of violence, with at least one case involving a firearm.

Police Advice and Safety Measures

Staff Sgt. Ivan Dascavich of the EPS emphasized the importance of caution in these transactions. "We always advise caution when meeting up with strangers," he stated in the release. "Meet in a safe, public location, such as the EPS Buy and Sell Exchange Zones, bring a friend, and above all, trust your instincts. If something feels off at any point, abandon the sale."

Geographic Spread and Arrests

The initial robberies were concentrated in the Duggan area of southwest Edmonton, but police have since received reports from multiple locations across the city. On January 31, 2026, authorities arrested three teenage boys in connection with one of the early robberies. Each has been charged with theft under $5,000, though investigators suspect more individuals may be involved and at large.

Ongoing Investigation and Public Warning

The EPS continues to investigate these incidents, highlighting that the robbery series might be ongoing. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity and follow safety guidelines to protect themselves during online marketplace transactions. This case underscores the risks associated with digital commerce and the need for heightened awareness in urban settings.
