Edmonton Police Charge Man with Murder After Woman Vanishes from Mill Woods
Edmonton police have charged a 47-year-old man with murder in connection with the disappearance of 29-year-old Marika Sutton, who vanished from the Mill Woods neighborhood last summer. The man was arrested in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and transported back to Edmonton on March 20, where he remains in custody.
Details of the Investigation
Marika 'Mika' Sutton was last reported seen in the Richfield area of Mill Woods in August. Her family, residing outside Alberta, reported her missing on September 25. By October, investigators had concluded she was likely the victim of a homicide.
Police revealed that Sutton and the accused were in an intimate relationship, with a documented history of domestic violence. Despite extensive searches, Sutton's remains have not been located. However, investigators believe her body was disposed of somewhere along Highway 2, between Wetaskiwin and Lacombe, between August 22 and August 29.
Police Appeal for Public Assistance
Homicide Detective Braydon Lawrence explained that police delayed public notification to protect the integrity of the investigation and ensure a successful arrest. "We are hopeful that someone travelling on Highway 2 between Wetaskiwin and Lacombe between Aug. 22 and Aug. 29 may recall seeing the Jeep in a strange or unusual location," Lawrence stated.
The vehicle in question is a black 2014 Jeep Patriot with license plate CFB 2578. Police are urging anyone with information, including landowners and hunters in the area, to come forward.
Charges and Collaborative Efforts
The accused, John Angus Joseph MacArthur, faces charges of second-degree murder and indignity to a body. The investigation involved collaboration between Edmonton's homicide and drug and gang enforcement units, Calgary police, and Charlottetown police.
