Edmonton Man Faces Extensive Charges in Human Trafficking and Animal Abuse Case
A 47-year-old Edmonton man is confronting 26 serious charges following a comprehensive investigation by ALERT Edmonton's human trafficking unit. The charges encompass multiple sexual offences against women and disturbing allegations of bestiality involving a dog.
Investigation Uncovers Multiple Victims
Jonathan Allard, 47, was arrested by Edmonton police on March 26 after an investigation that began in June of last year. According to ALERT officials, the investigation was initiated when one alleged victim contacted authorities for assistance. The woman reported being contacted through social media to relocate to Edmonton, where she was subsequently forced into the sex trade.
ALERT has identified at least five victims in this case, with authorities expressing concern that additional victims may exist. The investigation revealed that Allard allegedly arranged sexual services, communicated with clients, collected money, and exercised control over the victims.
Disturbing Animal Abuse Allegations
In a particularly troubling development, ALERT disclosed evidence indicating that a dog had been sexually and physically abused by the accused. This revelation adds significant gravity to the case, resulting in additional charges under the Animal Protection Act.
"We know there are at least five other victims. We would like to speak to them and anyone else who has been exploited by Allard. These are extreme circumstances with life-altering impact and trauma. We would like to hold Allard accountable for all his victims," stated ALERT Staff Sgt. Chris Hayes in an official media release.
Comprehensive Charge List
Allard faces an extensive list of charges including:
- Trafficking in persons
- Receiving material benefit from trafficking
- Forcible confinement
- Assault
- Procuring sexual services
- Advertising sexual services of another person
- Bestiality
- Causing unnecessary pain, suffering or injury to a dog
- Animal neglect
- Causing or permitting an animal to be in distress
- Failing to ensure an animal has adequate food or water
Support for Victims and Ongoing Investigation
The identified victims have received support through ALERT's safety network coordinators. Authorities continue to encourage any additional victims or individuals with information about the case to come forward. Survivors of human trafficking can access assistance by calling 211 for help.
Allard remains in custody as the legal process unfolds, with his next court appearance scheduled for April 16. The investigation remains active as authorities work to identify any additional victims and gather further evidence in this disturbing case that spans both human and animal abuse allegations.
