Daughter on Trial for Manslaughter in Death of 96-Year-Old Toronto Mother

Eva Samanos broke down in tears and covered her eyes as graphic photographs of her elderly mother, Visiliki Atanasovski, were presented in court. The images depicted the 96-year-old woman covered in rotting, bone-exposed bedsores, highlighting the severe neglect she allegedly endured before her death in January 2024.

Disturbing Testimony Unveils Horrific Conditions

Samanos has pleaded not guilty to charges of manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death, and failing to provide the necessaries of life. She is representing herself in a judge-alone trial, where paramedic Timothy Driver provided chilling testimony about the scene he encountered at the Broadview Avenue home in Toronto.

Driver described the residence as resembling that of a "hoarder", with floors and counters buried under debris and garbage bags stacked three to four feet high. A powerful stench of rotting food and human waste permeated the air, making it difficult for emergency responders to navigate.

Once they managed to reach Atanasovski, paramedics found her naked on the living room floor, with her head and shoulders propped against a sofa. Samanos reportedly told them her mother, who suffered from dementia, had been lying there for three days. Driver noted that Samanos appeared "nonchalant" and not overly concerned about her mother's dire condition.

Severe Neglect and Alleged Elder Abuse

The elderly woman was discovered sitting in a pool of her own urine and feces, dirty and in critical condition. Driver testified that she had no detectable pulse and her heart was arrhythmic, indicating she was "incredibly sick." When paramedics rolled her over to place her on a tarp for transport, they observed profound tissue breakdown from her mid-back to her tailbone, where the skin had worn away to expose bone.

An officer who later photographed the injuries testified that they emitted a smell of "rotting flesh" and "decomposition," further underscoring the severity of the neglect. Driver recounted that Samanos mentioned asking a neighbor for help to lift her mother off the floor, but the neighbor was uncomfortable and advised her to call 911. When questioned why she hadn't called earlier, Samanos did not provide a clear answer, according to Driver.

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Trial

Suspicious of elder abuse, Driver reported the incident to Toronto Police. Samanos was arrested at Michael Garron Hospital, where her mother had been taken, and initially charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm. The charges were upgraded to manslaughter after Atanasovski died the following day.

The trial continues as the court examines the evidence and testimonies to determine Samanos's culpability in her mother's tragic death. This case has drawn significant attention to issues of elder care and neglect in urban settings.
