Two Canadian individuals were apprehended while attempting to enter the United States with a significant quantity of marijuana concealed within their vehicle, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The incident occurred at the Lewiston Bridge border crossing, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat drug smuggling across international boundaries.
K-9 Team Uncovers Hidden Narcotics in Mercedes SUV
On March 21, 2026, CBP officers at the Lewiston Bridge were alerted by a narcotics detector dog to a Mercedes Benz SUV bearing Ontario license plates. The canine's keen sense of smell prompted a thorough inspection of the vehicle, leading to the discovery of anomalies in both the rear quarter panel and the trunk door during a subsequent scan.
A search of the SUV allegedly revealed six vacuum-sealed bags containing a green leafy substance, which later tested positive for marijuana. The total weight of the confiscated drugs was approximately six pounds, with an estimated street value exceeding $16,000.
Officials Praise Diligence of Border Protection Teams
Acting Port Director Sharon Swiatek commended the efforts of the CBP team in a statement, emphasizing the critical role played by the highly trained K-9 unit. "Our canine's detection abilities and the diligence of our officers were instrumental in this successful interdiction," Swiatek said. "This operation not only led to the seizure of illegal substances but also resulted in the transfer of two suspects to local authorities for criminal prosecution."
The individuals involved were identified as Andrea Seivewright, 43, and Daniel Hughes, 35. Both were turned over to the Lewiston Police Department and charged with felony second-degree possession of marijuana.
