Canadian Man Receives 46-Year Sentence for Molesting U.S. Teenager
A Canadian man has been sentenced to 46 years in a United States prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a 13-year-old Indiana girl he met through online grooming. The case highlights the dangers of digital predators crossing international borders to exploit vulnerable minors.
Deliberate Exploitation Across Borders
Mahdi Hosseini, a 22-year-old from Manitoba, Canada, was sentenced in Indiana after entering guilty pleas to multiple charges including child molesting. According to prosecutors, Hosseini "deliberately sought out a child, gained her trust, deceived her family, and crossed international borders to exploit her."
Prosecutor Loren Delp emphasized the calculated nature of the crime in a statement, noting that Hosseini specifically targeted a minor through deceptive means that spanned international boundaries.
Online Grooming and Deception
Court documents reveal that Hosseini first contacted the victim in April through Discord, a popular social media messaging platform. Over several months, he cultivated a relationship with the teenager that progressed to exchanging indecent messages and photographs.
The girl's mother told authorities she was aware her daughter was communicating with what she believed was a "boy" in Canada. Given the geographical distance—the border crossing at Emerson, Manitoba is more than 1,500 kilometers from Avon, Indiana by car—she initially allowed the conversations to continue despite some uneasiness.
Elaborate Scheme to Meet the Victim
Hosseini traveled from Canada to Indiana in late August, where he employed an elaborate deception to gain access to the victim. He posed as the father of one of the girl's friends and attended a garage sale at the mother's home.
After purchasing items, Hosseini invited the teenager to join him and his alleged daughter for a museum visit. The mother agreed, but became suspicious when she noticed his Manitoba license plates and recalled her daughter's communication with a Canadian "boy."
Discovery and Arrest
When they returned from the outing, the mother suggested they all attend a church service together and asked Hosseini to follow them in his car. During the drive, under pressure from her mother, the girl admitted she loved Hosseini and revealed she had been to his hotel room, though she claimed they only "cuddled and watched movies."
The mother immediately contacted police, who met them at the church and took Hosseini into custody. Investigators later found lewd photographs, sexually explicit messages, and conversations about deceiving the mother on the victim's phone.
Evidence and Legal Proceedings
The teenager told police she was aware of Hosseini's actual age and admitted to having sexual relations with him on August 29, the day after his arrival in Indiana. On Hosseini's own device, authorities discovered what appeared to be a topless photograph of the minor.
Hosseini faced multiple serious charges including two counts of child molesting (level 1 felonies), promotion of sexual trafficking of a minor, and child solicitation. According to Indiana criminal defense attorney Shari Blessing, child molestation convictions at the level 1 felony classification carry penalties of 20 to 40 years imprisonment.
The promotion charge carries a potential sentence of 3 to 16 years, while solicitation convictions can result in 2 to 12 years. All three charges include fines up to $10,000. Hosseini's 46-year sentence reflects the severity of his crimes and the premeditated nature of his exploitation.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by online predators who use digital platforms to groom vulnerable minors, and the importance of vigilance in monitoring children's online interactions regardless of perceived geographical barriers.
