Calgary Police Investigate Two More Extortion-Related Shootings in Northeast
Calgary police are actively investigating two additional extortion-related shootings that occurred in the city's northeast, specifically targeting members of the South Asian community. These incidents have raised significant concerns about public safety and organized crime activities in the region.
Details of the Recent Incidents
During a media briefing held at the Calgary Police Service headquarters in Westwinds on Monday, Deputy Chief Asif Rashid provided specific details about the two shootings. The first incident occurred just before 3 a.m. on Sunday in the 8400 block of Saddle Ridge Drive N.E., where two unidentified individuals fired multiple gunshots into a residence before fleeing the scene in a white sedan.
The second shooting took place early Monday morning, just after midnight, in the 300 block of Savannah Park N.E. In this case, an unknown offender fired several shots into another residence before fleeing on foot. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in either incident, though police have not yet determined if the offenders in both cases are connected.
Police Response and Investigation
Deputy Chief Rashid confirmed that the Calgary Police Service is collaborating with the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) to investigate these crimes. This joint forces operation represents a coordinated effort to address what appears to be a pattern of extortion-related violence in the city.
Regarding the Monday morning shooting, Rashid revealed that the resident had previously made two reports to police on February 12 and 16. These reports are being investigated as part of the broader extortion pattern, with immediate intake and triage procedures implemented following such complaints.
Social Media Claims and Forensic Analysis
On social media platforms, a video circulated from associates claiming affiliation with the Lawrence Bishnoi Gang, taking responsibility for the Monday shooting. Deputy Chief Rashid acknowledged awareness of this footage, stating that preliminary analysis suggests a possible connection to the Savannah Park incident.
"I have seen the footage, and our investigators at a preliminary analysis believe that there might be some nexus from that video to the shooting that happened in Savannah this morning," Rashid explained. "However, until we do a forensic examination and chase down some of the evidence associated with the video, we can't conclusively say that at this time."
Escalating Extortion Crime Statistics
With these two recent incidents, the total number of extortion crimes in Calgary has now reached 28 since the beginning of 2025. Deputy Chief Rashid provided specific breakdowns, noting that there were 17 such crimes in 2025 and 11 year-to-date in 2026.
This represents a concerning trend that law enforcement officials are taking seriously. While not providing specific operational details, Rashid confirmed that police have implemented a suppression plan to address these crimes in Calgary, indicating a strategic approach to combatting this pattern of criminal activity.
Community Impact and Ongoing Concerns
The targeting of the South Asian community in these extortion-related shootings has created particular concern among residents and community leaders. These incidents follow previous community engagement efforts, including extortion town halls that connected law enforcement with South Asian community members to address safety concerns.
The Calgary Police Service continues to emphasize its commitment to investigating these crimes thoroughly while working to prevent further incidents through coordinated enforcement strategies and community partnerships.
