Calgary Youth Hockey Coach Arrested on Multiple Child Exploitation Charges

A 23-year-old Calgary man involved in youth sports has been arrested and charged with 23 offences related to child luring and sexual exploitation of underage girls. The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) announced the arrest following a multi-agency investigation involving Calgary Police Service, Red Deer RCMP, and Morinville RCMP.

Extensive Charges and Investigation Details

Malik Buccini-Small was taken into custody on March 17 after three identified victims came forward to police. The charges against him include:

  • Child luring and invitation to sexual touching
  • Extortion and uttering threats
  • Obtaining sexual services for consideration
  • Making sexually explicit materials available to a child
  • Creating, distributing, possessing, and accessing child sexual abuse materials

According to investigators, Buccini-Small allegedly used social media platforms to contact young girls, making demands and threats for sexual content. In one particularly alarming instance, a victim felt so threatened that she called 911 for immediate assistance.

Potential Additional Victims Identified

While only three victims have been officially identified so far, ALERT's Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit believes there may be additional victims based on digital evidence collected during their investigation. The identified victims range in age from 7 to 15 years old and are located in Red Deer and Morinville, in addition to Calgary.

"Our priority is to protect children and help those that have been victimized," said ICE Constable Mackenzie Jordan. "We have digital evidence that points to other victims and we are hoping they can come forward and share their information with police."

Coaching Position and Online Identities

At the time of his arrest, Buccini-Small was actively involved in youth sports as an assistant coach with a girls' hockey team in Calgary. Investigators have revealed that he allegedly used the usernames "iggypup" or "wakanda4ever" online, along with the aliases "MJ" or "007" when communicating with potential victims.

The investigation began after the initial victims reported their interactions with Buccini-Small to authorities. The collaborative effort between multiple police agencies allowed investigators to gather sufficient evidence to make the arrest and bring formal charges.

Current Status and Legal Proceedings

Buccini-Small remains in custody following his arrest and is scheduled to appear in court. The serious nature of the charges reflects the comprehensive investigation conducted by law enforcement agencies across Alberta.

Authorities are urging anyone with additional information about this case or who may have been victimized to come forward and contact their local police department or ALERT's Internet Child Exploitation unit directly. The investigation continues as officers work to identify and support any additional victims who may have been targeted by the accused.
