Caledon Ontario Provincial Police officers had a busy start to the new year, handling a string of automobile-related investigations that included an alleged impaired driver nearly colliding with a police cruiser, a recovered stolen vehicle, and multiple drinking and driving charges over the Christmas period.
Near Miss with Police Cruiser Leads to Impaired Charge
An OPP officer narrowly avoided a collision in the early hours of Thursday, January 1, 2026. The incident occurred around 1:20 a.m. on Highway 50 near Ellwood Drive in Bolton. The officer had to take evasive action to avoid a vehicle that had pulled out from a private driveway.
After stopping the vehicle, the officer administered a roadside screening test, which the driver failed. A 33-year-old Caledon resident now faces charges of operation while impaired by drug (over 80 mg) and careless driving. The accused is scheduled to appear at Orangeville Provincial Court on January 22, 2026. As part of the immediate penalties, the driver received a 90-day license suspension and a 7-day vehicle impoundment.
Traffic Stop and Stolen Vehicle Recovery
In a separate incident just before New Year's Eve, a traffic stop on Highway 410 near Valleywood Boulevard at approximately 12:38 a.m. on December 31 led to multiple charges. The driver, 20-year-old Montel Opoku of Cambridge, was allegedly found to be a novice driver violating the conditions of his G1 license and failing to comply with a previous court order.
Opoku was charged with several offences, including speeding, driving without a license, and having cannabis readily available in the vehicle. He was held for a bail hearing.
Earlier in the week, on December 27 around 1 p.m., police recovered a stolen vehicle from a business area near King Street and Airport Road. Two suspects fled on foot before officers arrived but were located and arrested after a perimeter was established.
Kuldeep Singh Bhangu, 27, of Brampton, faces a lengthy list of charges including possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of controlled substances, assault with a weapon, and driving while prohibited. Onkar Kalia, 36, of Toronto, was charged with possession of break-in instruments and possession of property obtained by crime. Both individuals were held pending bail hearings.
Series of Christmas Season Impaired Driving Charges
The holiday enforcement period was particularly active for Caledon OPP, who laid impaired driving charges on multiple occasions.
On Christmas Day at 10:16 a.m., officers responded to a collision report on Hesp Drive. The driver, 32-year-old James Nesbitt of Caledon, was arrested and charged with impaired operation, failure to remain at the scene of a collision, and operating a vehicle without insurance.
Later that same day, at 10:08 p.m., police were called to another collision at Horseshoe Hill Road and Grange Side Road. Ksenia Nemeth, 43, of Mississauga, was arrested and charged with impaired operation and refusing to provide a breath sample.
The enforcement continued into the following week. On December 29 at 6:47 a.m., police responded to a report of a possible impaired driver on Highway 10 near Charleston Side Road. Riliwan Bolaji Tijani, 34, of Shelburne, was arrested and charged with operation while impaired.
Hours later, another call about a suspected impaired driver came in for Highway 10 near Terry Street. Officers located the vehicle and arrested the driver, 25-year-old Jamellah Jennah Ahmed of Scarborough, who was also charged with operation while impaired. Both Tijani and Ahmed received 7-day license suspensions and vehicle impoundments.
The series of incidents highlights the ongoing challenges police face on Ontario roads during the holiday season and serves as a stark reminder of the legal consequences of impaired and careless driving.
