Pakistan Labels Taliban 'Illegitimate Regime' Amid Escalating 'Open War'

In a dramatic escalation of regional tensions, Pakistan has declared an "open war" against neighboring Afghanistan, with its information minister publicly branding the ruling Taliban as an "illegitimate regime." The declaration comes as cross-border military operations intensify, marking a significant breakdown in relations between the two nations.

Accusations of Terrorism and Oppression

Pakistan's Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, in a statement from the High Commission in Ottawa, accused the Taliban-controlled government of Afghanistan of "actively sponsoring cross-border terrorism, institutionalizing slavery, and orchestrating the systematic erasure" of women and ethnic minorities. Tarar emphasized that the Taliban's rule is based on repression and distorts Islamic teachings, stating it "have nothing to do with Islam."

Military Clashes and Cross-Border Strikes

Hostilities boiled over late this week, with Associated Press reporting Pakistani air strikes along the 2,600 km border, prompting counterattacks by Afghanistan. Explosions were heard in Kabul and other provinces after renewed Pakistani strikes targeted military installations. Pakistan alleges that Afghanistan provides safe havens and training to insurgents who attack Pakistani civilians and facilities.

Afghanistan's Response and Historical Context

Afghan government spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid defended their actions as a message that "our hands can reach their throats," accusing Pakistan of avoiding dialogue. The Taliban regained power in August 2021 after the withdrawal of U.S. and NATO troops, having previously ruled from 1996 to 2001. Tarar maintains the Taliban seized power by force without legitimate backing from the people.

This conflict underscores deep-seated regional instability, with both sides trading blame as violence escalates, threatening further humanitarian crises in the area.
