Chess Body Suspends Kramnik for Unproven Cheating Claims

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has suspended former world champion Vladimir Kramnik for a minimum of one year following his unsubstantiated accusations of cheating against other players, including American grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky, who died last year at age 29.

Kramnik's Allegations and Suspension

Kramnik accused Naroditsky of cheating in 2024 and continued to share his suspicions on social media. Naroditsky, a highly skilled chess player known for his educational YouTube videos and livestreams that helped popularize online chess, denied the allegations. FIDE stated that Kramnik publicly alleged cheating without “adequate evidentiary support,” violating its rules against cyber bullying.

In a statement, FIDE representatives said, “He exposed identifiable players to unjustified reputational harm and undermined the safeguards established by the disciplinary framework.” The federation emphasized that combating cheating is a priority, but allegations must be addressed through proper procedures and supported by evidence.

Kramnik's Response

Kramnik told the Associated Press he plans to appeal the suspension. In a social media post, he wrote, “I am absolutely confident that this unlawful verdict will ultimately be overturned, and I intend to pursue all necessary instances to the very end in order to restore justice and, in particular, my reputation.” He called Naroditsky’s death a tragedy and claimed there was a cynical campaign to link him to the death without factual basis.

Naroditsky's Death and Impact

Naroditsky was found dead at his North Carolina home in October 2024. A toxicology report determined the cause was an abnormal heartbeat caused by an accidental overdose. Before his death, Naroditsky had spoken about the toll Kramnik’s allegations took on him. In his final livestream, he said, “Ever since the Kramnik stuff, I feel like if I start doing well, people assume the worst of intentions. The issue is just the lingering effect of it.”
