Will Beyoncé, Timothée Chalamet, and Donald Trump Vote in Canadian Elections?
Will Beyoncé and Trump Vote in Canadian Elections?

Canadians are accustomed to American celebrities commenting on their politics and elections. However, a new law is drawing attention south of the border, potentially enabling many American celebrities to vote in future Canadian elections.

Bill C-3 Expands Citizenship Eligibility

Bill C-3, passed into law last December, changes how citizenship is passed on to children of Canadian citizens born abroad. Previously, citizenship could only pass down one generation after a family left Canada. Now, it can pass down several generations, meaning people whose families have not lived in Canada for generations could claim citizenship.

For instance, Caitlyn Jenner could claim citizenship through her father from New Brunswick, and actor Timothée Chalamet through his grandmother from Brantford, Ontario. The law has been interpreted broadly, opening the door to millions of Americans.

Historical Context of Citizenship Laws

Canadian citizenship laws have changed multiple times. In 2006, during the Israel-Hezbollah war, the Harper government evacuated 15,000 Canadian citizens at great expense, many of whom returned to Lebanon immediately after. This led to a backlash against 'Canadians of convenience.' In 2007, the Harper government restricted citizenship from passing down more than one generation after a family left Canada.

However, in December 2023, Justice Jasmine Akbarali ruled that this restriction was unconstitutional, violating sections 6 and 15 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The Trudeau government chose not to appeal, agreeing with the decision that cheapens Canadian citizenship.

Potential Impact on American Celebrities

According to the Associated Press, millions of Americans are now exploring ancestral claims to Canadian citizenship. Celebrities like Beyoncé could claim citizenship through a distant ancestor, Joseph Broussard, an Acadian hero. Others such as Shirley MacLaine, Amy Poehler, Paula Abdul, and Donald Trump may also have ancestral ties.

The bottom line is that Bill C-3, an ill-conceived response to a court decision that should have been appealed, leaves uncertainty about who will claim citizenship. Whether it is Beyoncé or Donald Trump, someone will be upset.
