U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Monday that the United States and Iran have a 'pretty solid' draft deal on the table to conclude the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and restore access through the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi before boarding his plane, Rubio emphasized that Washington would either secure a favorable agreement or address Iran through alternative means.
Details of the Proposed Deal
Rubio described the proposal as a 'pretty solid thing on the table,' highlighting Iran's capacity to reopen the strait and engage in a significant, time-limited negotiation regarding its nuclear program. He expressed hope that the deal could be successfully implemented. This announcement follows President Donald Trump's weekend remarks that a ceasefire with Iran was 'largely negotiated,' though he later cautioned against rushing into an agreement.
Oil Prices Hit Two-Week Lows
The prospect of a peace deal has driven oil prices to their lowest levels in two weeks. Brent crude futures fell by $4.64, or 4.48%, to $98.90 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude dropped $4.42, or 4.58%, to $92.18 per barrel. Analysts attribute the decline to growing optimism that shipping restrictions through the Strait of Hormuz may soon be lifted.
Injuries of Iran's Supreme Leader Revealed
Iran's Health Ministry disclosed that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei sustained superficial injuries to his face, head, and legs during the February 28 airstrike that killed his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Ministry spokesperson Hossein Kermanpour confirmed that Khamenei's limbs were not amputated and that his injuries were minor, requiring no special treatment. He was released from the hospital the following day. Earlier reports from the New York Times had suggested more severe injuries, but Iranian officials have consistently maintained that Khamenei is in good health.
Trump Demands Abraham Accords Expansion
In a post on Truth Social, President Trump mandated that all Middle Eastern countries immediately sign the Abraham Accords once a deal with Iran is finalized. He also threatened 'bigger and stronger' military action if an agreement is not reached. The Abraham Accords, brokered by the U.S. in 2020, normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations, including the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. Trump stated that Iran would be honored to join this 'unparalleled World Coalition' if it signs the agreement.
Negotiations Continue Amid Uncertainty
Trump noted that discussions with Middle Eastern leaders have taken place and that joining the accords should be a requirement. He added, 'Negotiations with the Islamic Republic of Iran are proceeding nicely! It will only be a Great Deal for all or, no Deal at all — Back to the Battlefront and shooting, but bigger and stronger than ever before.'
Rubio Emphasizes Diplomatic Efforts
Reiterating his stance, Rubio told reporters that the U.S. would give diplomacy every chance to succeed before exploring other options. He stressed that the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz would remain in full force until an agreement is certified and signed. The developments come as the world watches for a resolution to the Iran war, which has significant implications for global energy markets and regional stability.
