Trump's 2020 Tweet Mocked After Iran Deal Echoes Obama's JCPOA
Trump's 2020 Tweet Mocked After Iran Deal

A resurfaced 2020 tweet written by President Donald Trump is receiving renewed attention and mockery on social media following his announcement of a deal to end the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. The tweet, from Jan. 3, 2020, when Trump was still actively using Twitter (now X), resurfaced on Monday as the president touted the peace agreement at the G7 summit in France.

Trump's 2020 Tweet

“Iran never won a war, but never lost a negotiation!” Trump wrote at the time. The tweet has now come back to haunt him as critics point out the irony of his current deal.

Details of the New Deal

While details about the “memorandum of understanding” to end the nearly four-month war still haven’t been released, the issue at the core of the conflict – Iran’s nuclear program – appears to remain unresolved under this agreement. A Pakistani official told The Associated Press that the deal lifts the U.S. naval blockade, reopens the Strait of Hormuz and kicks off 60 days of talks about the nuclear program.

When asked about the potential similarities between Obama’s 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and his own deal with Iran on Monday, Trump continued to deny that any existed. “It’s not like the Obama document, which was just a terrible document,” Trump said. “This is a very powerful document, and I want it to be released. So probably pretty soon.”

While the Trump deal reportedly ends the fighting for now and reopens one of the globe’s most critical waterways, even Obama appeared skeptical that the new deal would be any different from his. “It is doubtful that any agreement that arises is going to be significantly different, or a significant improvement from the deal that we had in the first place, and had worked for a long stretch of time before we, the United States, pulled out of it,” Obama told ABC News’ Robin Roberts in a “Good Morning America” interview scheduled to air on Wednesday.

Trump unilaterally withdrew the U.S. from that deal during his first term.

Social Media Reaction

As for the resurfaced tweet, many critics said they believe Trump achieved precious little in the war and merely managed to broker a deal similar to Obama’s:

  • “They appear to have won both, this time.” – Cassie Pritchard
  • “Prescient” – Chuck Todd
  • “Keeping the streak alive.” – Travis Akers
  • “There’s ALWAYS a tweet” – Republicans against Trump
  • “Trump is paying Iran taxpayer-funded reparations now.” – Christopher Hale
  • “They managed to win both against you.” – Spencer Hakimian

One user commented: “Mr. President, you are weak. Enough said. This is your legacy, not because I said so, but because you've done the very same thing that the JCPOA did. Nothing new here. Your legacy: back-flips by motorcycles at the WH and weakness when it comes rite down to it. You're weak.”
