Former U.S. President Donald Trump launched a late-night social media attack on Sunday, targeting Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota with incendiary demands for her imprisonment or deportation to Somalia.
A Heated Social Media Exchange
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed knowledge of a massive $19 billion fraud in Minnesota connected to the Somali community. He directed his fury at Omar, calling her a "fake ‘Congresswoman’" and a "constant complainer who hates the USA." Trump asserted she should face jail time or an even "worse punishment" of being sent back to Somalia, which he labelled "one of the absolutely worst countries in the World." He sarcastically added she could help "MAKE SOMALIA GREAT AGAIN!"
Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who made history as the first Somali American elected to Congress, was born in Somalia and became a U.S. citizen in the year 2000. She has represented Minnesota in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2019.
Background of a Deepening Political Feud
This latest outburst is part of an intensifying personal and political feud between the two figures. The conflict has grown more heated following investigations launched during the Trump administration into social services fraud in Minnesota, probes that Trump has explicitly linked to the state's Somali population.
Trump's post about Omar followed an earlier Truth Social message on Sunday morning. In it, he accused Omar and Minnesota's Democratic Governor, Tim Walz, whom he called "crooked," of trying to distract from a federal fraud probe by opposing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in the state. He questioned why Minnesota would resist the removal of "violent criminals" and alleged that protests included "highly paid professional agitators and anarchists."
"The crooked Governor and ‘Congresswoman’ Omar, who married her brother, don’t mind because it keeps the focus of attention off the 18 Billion Dollar, Plus, FRAUD, that has taken place in the State!" Trump wrote, repeating an old, debunked conspiracy theory about Omar's personal life. Both Omar and Governor Walz have consistently defended their state and its residents.
Omar Fires Back at Trump's "Obsession"
Representative Omar has publicly responded to Trump's sustained focus on her. In a post on the social media platform X on December 9, 2025, she decried his "obsession" as "beyond weird."
"He needs serious help. Since he has no economic policies to tout, he’s resorting to regurgitating bigoted lies instead. He continues to be a national embarrassment," Omar wrote.
This exchange follows similar attacks from Trump in December, where he broadly accused Somali immigrants in Minnesota of being "scammers" and "lowlifes" without providing evidence, specifically naming Omar as "one of the many scammers." It is important to note that Ilhan Omar has not been accused of any wrongdoing in connection with the fraud investigations he references.
The ongoing war of words highlights the deeply polarized political climate in the United States, where personal attacks and inflammatory rhetoric continue to dominate headlines. As of the time of reporting, neither the White House nor Omar's office had issued further public comments in response to Trump's latest statements.
