Donald Trump faced widespread ridicule on social media on Thursday after he awkwardly explained his latest derogatory term for Democrats during a live interview on Fox News.
Trump's Explanation of 'Dumocrats'
During his interview with Sean Hannity, held amid a two-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump discussed potential deals with China, including the possibility of Chinese purchases of U.S. soybeans. He then pivoted to domestic politics, attacking Democrats who opposed the recently passed Farm Bill, labeling them as 'defective.' Trump claimed he had 'come up with a new name' for Democrats.
'Dumocrats,' Trump said. 'They're dumb. It's D-U-M. I got rid of the B. So you're only changing one letter, right? E goes, and the U comes. It's a Dumocrat.' Hannity, who has previously campaigned with Trump, responded by flattering the president, suggesting he occupies 'more space in people's heads than any one person on the face of this Earth.'
Social Media Backlash
The explanation quickly drew mockery on social media. Many users pointed out that the term 'Dumocrats' has been used for years by Trump supporters, contradicting his claim of originality. One user commented, 'That's the most Boomer thing ever. MAGA has been using that term for a decade now.' Another wrote, 'This is a broken brained childlike imbecile. This is not normal behavior for anyone, much less the President.'
Critics also highlighted the irony of Trump needing to explain the joke. As one tweet noted, 'Like they say, if you gotta explain the joke it ain't a joke.' Others expressed embarrassment on behalf of the nation, with one user asking, 'WHY AMERICA? WHY DO WE ALLOW THIS?'
The incident adds to a long history of Trump's nickname-based attacks, including 'Crooked Hillary' and 'Sleepy Joe.' Many observers noted that 'Dumocrats' joins a list of favored MAGA terms like 'dumbocrat' and 'demonrat.'
