President Donald Trump made a lighthearted jab at Vice President JD Vance on Monday, referring to him as a "little boy" while recounting the chaotic moments at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner last month.
Trump's Remarks at Police Week Dinner
During a Police Week dinner hosted at the White House Rose Garden, Trump praised the Secret Service and its chief, Sean Curran. He described how agents swiftly moved Vance to safety after a shooting erupted.
"They had great professional people, and they came out, and within seconds, I saw them take JD by the shoulders and lift him up like he was a little boy," Trump said. He then added, "I said, 'How come they didn't lift me up so fast?' JD got ripped out of the chair, that was the view of the week."
Viral Video of the Incident
Trump's comments came weeks after a viral video from the April 25 shooting showed Secret Service agents rushing to the main stage table, grabbing Vance by the shoulders, and escorting him out before the president. The footage sparked widespread attention and discussion.
The president had previously brought up the incident in an interview with "60 Minutes" last month. Trump explained that he had wanted to see what was happening rather than being quickly removed. "And I wasn't making it that easy for them. I wanted to see what was going on. And by that time, we started to realize maybe it was a bad problem," he told CBS' Norah O'Donnell.
Arrest and Charges
Cole Allen, a 31-year-old engineer from California, was arrested in connection with the shooting. He faces charges of attempting to assassinate the president and discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence. Allen pleaded not guilty on Monday.
Trump also thanked Sean Curran during his remarks, stating, "I thought you did a great job two weeks ago. You know why? Because I'm here. We consider being here a success."
