U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday that he would try to attend his eldest son's wedding but that the timing was problematic due to the ongoing war with Iran.
Conflict of Schedules
Donald Trump Jr., 48, is set to marry Bettina Anderson in the Bahamas this weekend, according to U.S. media reports. The wedding will be a small, private affair. However, the president is simultaneously working to negotiate an end to his unpopular military campaign in Iran, which has negatively impacted his approval ratings and fueled voter discontent over the cost of living ahead of November's midterm elections.
“He’d like me to go. It’s going to be just a small little private affair and I’m going to try and make it,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “I said, ‘This is not good timing for me. I have a thing called Iran and other things.'”
Media Scrutiny
Trump acknowledged the media's potential reaction to his attendance or absence. “That’s one I can’t win on. If I do attend, I get killed. If I don’t attend, I get killed — by the fake news of course,” he said. “Hopefully they’re going to have a great marriage.”
Don Jr., an executive vice president at The Trump Organization and a vocal supporter of his father's MAGA agenda, is often seen at the president's side. He accompanied his father to the White House earlier this month from Mar-a-Lago. Last year, Don Jr. hinted at a possible presidential run “maybe one day.” Trump's second term ends in January 2029, and he has not yet endorsed a successor.
