U.S. President Donald Trump celebrated his 80th birthday with a series of Ultimate Fighting Championship matches held on the White House lawn, an event that drew both spectacle and sharp criticism.
Event Details
Flanked by influential figures including Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, Paramount Skydance's David Ellison, cabinet secretaries, and UFC president Dana White, Trump sat ringside at a Colosseum-style arena seating 4,000 built on the White House front lawn. The arena featured The Claw, a 90-foot, 600-ton metal structure covering the UFC octagon. The event also marked U.S. Flag Day and the country's 250th anniversary.
Trump's family attended, including all five children: Don Jr., Ivanka with husband Jared Kushner, Tiffany, Eric, and Barron, who made a rare public appearance.
Unprecedented Scenes
UFC fighters warmed up inside the White House, descending the Truman Balcony flanked by a famous photo of Trump after a 2024 assassination attempt. Social media captured Trump appearing to nap during the fights, with one post captioned: "BREAKING: DONALD TRUMP HAS FALLEN ASLEEP AT HIS 80TH BIRTHDAY UFC FREEDOM 250 EVENT."
Criticism and Opposition
Critics condemned the event. California Sen. Adam Schiff questioned its relevance to America's 250th birthday. Veterans for Responsible Leadership called it "the absolute worst of America." Conservative figure Benny Johnson accused the Weather Network of inaccurate forecasts to undermine the event.
Before the fight, a lawsuit from a Vietnam veteran and activist sought to block it over lack of approvals and Trump's financial ties to UFC, but a judge denied an emergency injunction.
Conflict of Interest Allegations
Critics highlighted Trump's stock purchase in UFC parent company TKO Group Holdings, valued between $15,001 and $50,000 in late March. Jordan Libowitz of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington said: "Using the White House to promote a company whose stock you bought while promoting it is one of the worst conflicts of interest you could imagine. The agenda of this administration seems to start and stop with how to make Donald Trump richer."
