President Donald Trump unleashed a fiery response to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, demanding the New York Democrat apologize for claiming that "nobody respects" Border Patrol or Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Trump's Outburst on Truth Social
"Wow! Cryin' Chuck Schumer just said, for the whole World to hear, that 'NOBODY RESPECTS BORDER PATROL OR ICE,'" the president posted on Truth Social. "That is one of the most egregious, incorrect, unpatriotic, and dangerous statements I have EVER heard from a 'professional' politician. HE MUST IMMEDIATELY APOLOGIZE TO THESE GREAT PATRIOTS, AND I MEAN NOW!"
Schumer's Remarks on Immigration Authorities
Schumer made the disparaging comments on Wednesday while opposing Senate Republicans' efforts to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) following a monthslong shutdown. He argued against reopening DHS, stating that "nobody respects" border patrol agents and ICE officers.
The remarks came as DHS faced a funding crisis. On Tuesday, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin announced that the agency would run out of money to cover payroll by the first week of May.
Background on the Funding Dispute
Schumer accused Democrats of "putting homeland at risk" by blocking funding to DHS in February. The move was a response to public outrage over agents fatally shooting two American citizens in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in January. Democrats demanded reforms before approving additional funding.
As a result, DHS employees—including Transportation Security Administration agents who oversee U.S. airports—were forced to work without pay for weeks. The situation was resolved temporarily when Trump directed the department to tap into $10 billion allocated for border security under a Republican-backed spending package passed last July.
The president's demand for an apology underscores the ongoing tension between the administration and Democratic leaders over immigration enforcement and border security policies.
