Sudbury Police Cleared in Dog Bite Incident During IPV Arrest
Sudbury Police Cleared in Dog Bite Incident

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has cleared Sudbury police officers of any wrongdoing in a case where a suspect was bitten by a police dog during an arrest in January. The incident, which resulted in a fractured finger for the suspect, occurred during an intimate partner violence (IPV) investigation.

Incident Details

According to the SIU report, officers responded to a domestic disturbance call in Sudbury on January 15. The suspect allegedly became combative, leading officers to deploy a police dog. The dog bit the suspect's hand, fracturing his finger. The suspect was subsequently treated at a local hospital.

SIU Findings

The SIU, which investigates incidents involving police that result in serious injury or death, determined that the use of the police dog was justified under the circumstances. The agency stated that the officers acted within their legal authority and that there were no reasonable grounds to believe any officer committed a criminal offense.

In a statement, the SIU said, "The evidence indicates that the suspect was actively resisting arrest and posed a threat to officers. The deployment of the police dog was a reasonable use of force given the situation."

Police Response

Sudbury Police Chief Paul Pedersen expressed satisfaction with the SIU's conclusion. "We are pleased that the SIU has confirmed our officers acted appropriately. Our priority is always the safety of the public and our officers, and we will continue to use all available tools to ensure that."

Community Reaction

The incident has sparked discussion among community members about the use of police dogs in arrests. Some advocates have called for stricter guidelines on when canines can be deployed, while others support the police's discretion in high-risk situations.

The SIU's decision closes the investigation, and no charges will be laid against any officers involved.
