Saskatchewan Seeks Input on Adoption Act Changes

The Government of Saskatchewan is seeking public input on proposed amendments to the Adoption Act, aiming to modernize adoption processes and improve outcomes for children and families. The consultation period runs until June 30, 2026.

Key Proposed Changes

The amendments include streamlining adoption procedures, enhancing support for birth parents, and improving post-adoption contact agreements. The government also proposes updating language to reflect contemporary family structures and removing barriers for adoptive parents.

How to Provide Feedback

Residents can submit comments online through the provincial government's consultation portal or by mail. Public meetings will be held in Regina and Saskatoon in early June. The government will consider all feedback before finalizing the legislation.

Justice Minister Tim McLeod stated that the goal is to create a more flexible and inclusive adoption system that prioritizes the best interests of children. The current act has not been substantially updated since the 1990s.

Adoption advocates have welcomed the consultation, noting that modernizing the act could reduce delays and better support all parties involved in adoption.
