Parti Québécois Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon has promised that a PQ government would be highly active on the international stage, asserting Quebec's presence and interests abroad. Speaking at a press conference in Quebec City, Plamondon outlined a vision for a more assertive foreign policy that would prioritize Quebec's economic and cultural ties globally.
Proactive International Engagement
Plamondon emphasized that a PQ administration would not hesitate to represent Quebec's distinct identity in international forums. He criticized the current government for being too passive, arguing that Quebec must leverage its unique position to attract investment and promote its values. 'Quebec has a voice that deserves to be heard,' he stated, 'and we will ensure it is.'
Key Priorities
- Strengthening trade partnerships with Europe and Asia
- Promoting Quebec's cultural exports, including film and music
- Advocating for environmental leadership in climate negotiations
The leader also highlighted the importance of maintaining strong ties with France and other Francophone nations, as well as deepening cooperation with Indigenous communities on cross-border issues.
Plamondon's remarks come amid renewed debate over Quebec sovereignty, but he insisted that international activism is not solely about independence. 'Whether within Canada or beyond, Quebec must act as a full partner on the world stage,' he said. The PQ's platform includes establishing a dedicated trade office in emerging markets and increasing funding for international cultural exchanges.
