Obama Warns GOP, Urges Democrats to Avoid 'Gobbledygook'

Former President Barack Obama has expressed frustration with the Republican party and called for Democrats to improve their communication style. During an appearance on Tuesday night's episode of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," Obama addressed a perceived rift within the Democratic party, which Colbert described as "liberals vs. the left."

Obama's Concerns About the GOP

Obama, speaking from his nearly completed presidential center in Chicago, emphasized that the facility is nonpartisan. He expressed worry about the Republican party, stating that he wished for a "loyal opposition"—a party that is conservative but believes in the rule of law, judicial independence, and empirical evidence. Obama noted that such a Republican party existed in the past and that America needs two healthy parties.

Democratic Party Unity

Obama dismissed the idea of a significant rift between liberals and leftists within the Democratic party. He argued that most Democrats, independents, and even some Republicans share common values such as equality, fairness, living wages, and worker rights. The real problem, according to Obama, is that Democrats often fail to communicate effectively with ordinary people.

"What I'm more interested in Democrats is, do you know how to talk to regular people like we are not at a college seminar? Can you talk plain English to folks?" Obama said.

Praise for Zohran Mamdani

Obama praised New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani as an "extraordinary talent" for his ability to address specific issues in everyday language. Colbert agreed, noting that Mamdani "names what is obviously wrong" and proposes straightforward solutions. Obama enthusiastically added, "And not have a bunch of gobbledygook around it."

Colbert was amused by Obama's use of the word "gobbledygook" and suggested he etch it into his presidential library. Obama joked, "I'm going to carve it into some of the granite out here: 'No gobbledygook, just talk like normal people talk!'"

During the interview, Obama also subtly criticized President Donald Trump without naming him, highlighting his broader concerns about political discourse.
