The New Brunswick government faced intense questioning in the legislature on Tuesday over the upcoming closure of a dairy facility and the deal struck with Agropur. Opposition parties are demanding that the contract be released to the public, arguing that taxpayers deserve transparency.
Government Stance
Premier Susan Holt defended the agreement, stating that it protects jobs and ensures the long-term viability of the dairy industry in the province. She emphasized that the terms are confidential to protect commercial interests but assured that the deal is fair.
Opposition Demands
Progressive Conservative Leader Blaine Higgs pushed for full disclosure, accusing the government of hiding behind confidentiality clauses. The Green Party and Liberal members also called for a legislative committee to review the contract.
The debate comes as the Agropur plant in Saint John is set to close later this year, affecting hundreds of workers. The government has promised retraining and support for affected employees.
