Mullin Faces Backlash Over ICE 'Demonized' Remark

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin faced widespread criticism on Wednesday after stating, "For some reason, ICE has been demonized." The comment, made during a Police Week speech to agents and officers, quickly went viral as the Trump administration continues its controversial immigration enforcement crackdown.

Public Outrage on Social Media

Users on X responded with sarcasm and anger. One person wrote, "The murders and civil rights abuses might have been part of the reason," referencing the killings of Americans Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal agents in Minneapolis. Another user remarked, "Weird how you kidnap people off the street or just shoot them and then you're the bad guy. GFY…" A third comment read, "I think it might be related to arresting children and killing civilians, but idk."

ICE Under Scrutiny

Mullin, who replaced Kristi Noem in March, now oversees an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency facing intense scrutiny. According to an April report, ICE has detained over 6,000 children during Trump's second term. Data from the American Immigration Council indicated that at a peak deployment moment, 12 out of every 13 people arrested had no criminal record.

Public opinion appears to be shifting against the agency. A February survey found that two-thirds of Americans believe ICE has gone too far, while support for abolishing ICE reached 50% in March.

Mullin defended his personnel, saying, "I know morale has taken an absolute tank. And I hate it. Because our attitude reflects everyday sacrifice that we get to truly show the American people because we have the greatest gift in the world. We get to protect the homeland."
