Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu Switches Allegiance to Join Liberals

In a significant political shift, long-time Conservative Member of Parliament Marilyn Gladu has announced her defection to the Liberal Party, becoming the latest Tory to cross the floor under Prime Minister Mark Carney's government. The move, confirmed on Wednesday morning, adds to a growing list of high-profile departures from the Conservative caucus.

Gladu Cites Need for Economic Leadership and Collaboration

In a statement released to reporters, Gladu explained her decision, emphasizing the unprecedented challenges facing Canada. "The past year has been like no other that Canada has ever faced, and I’ve heard clearly from constituents that you want serious leadership and a real plan to build a stronger and more independent Canadian economy," she said. Representing the Sarnia—Lambton—Bkejwanong riding since 2015, Gladu highlighted her commitment to her community's priorities and the country's future, stating that joining Carney's caucus was the best choice for constructive governance.

Defection Deals Blow to Conservative Party

Gladu's departure is the latest in a series of defections that have weakened the Conservative ranks. This follows the exit of Edmonton Riverbend MP Matt Jeneroux just 49 days prior, as well as the high-profile moves of Acadie—Annapolis MP Chris d’Entremont and Markham—Unionville MP Michael Ma last year. The Conservative Party has not yet issued an official statement regarding Gladu's switch, but the loss of an experienced MP with a track record of electoral success is seen as a substantial setback.

Prime Minister Carney Welcomes Gladu to Liberal Ranks

Prime Minister Mark Carney swiftly welcomed Gladu into the Liberal fold, updating his itinerary to include a photo opportunity with her after a cabinet meeting. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Carney expressed honour at her joining, noting her practical leadership and extensive background in engineering and international business. "Marilyn brings the practical, results-driven leadership this effort demands," he wrote, praising her ability to work across party lines and her electoral victories in a bellwether riding.

Gladu Reflects on Riding's Political History and Future Goals

In her statement, Gladu described her Sarnia—Lambton—Bkejwanong constituency as a bellwether that typically elects MPs aligned with the governing party. "That was true for 52 years before the citizens here elected me four times, throughout which I have served in Opposition and done my best to advocate strongly for you," she said. She emphasized the current opportunity for a more collaborative approach to strengthen Canada's economy and global competitiveness, underscoring her shift as a move toward greater national unity and progress.
