Police in Guelph have arrested a man who was discovered living inside a vacant residential unit. The incident came to light during a routine property check by law enforcement officials on Monday.
Details of the Arrest
According to a press release from the Guelph Police Service, officers responded to a complaint about suspicious activity at a vacant apartment building on the city's south end. Upon arrival, they found a 42-year-old man residing in one of the unoccupied units. The man was taken into custody without incident.
The individual faces charges of break and enter, as well as mischief under $5,000. Police have not released the man's name pending a court appearance scheduled for later this week.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities are investigating how the man gained access to the unit and how long he had been living there. Neighbors reported seeing lights on in the vacant building over the past few weeks, but no one had alerted police until recently.
This case highlights ongoing challenges with vacant properties in the city. Local officials have been working to address issues related to abandoned buildings, which can attract illegal activity and pose safety risks to the community.
