Surrey police officers responding to a possible break-in shot a man on Monday night in the Panorama Ridge neighbourhood. The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO) has been notified and is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to the Surrey Police Service, officers were dispatched to a home in the 12200-block of Southpark Crescent shortly after 7:30 p.m. following reports of a suspicious individual. Upon arrival, the man allegedly confronted the police, prompting officers to discharge their service pistols.

Both police and paramedics provided first aid to the injured man before he was transported to a hospital. The IIO has since taken over the investigation and is appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Investigators will first determine whether the man's injuries meet the threshold of serious harm and whether they are linked to police action or inaction. The civilian-led police watchdog reviews cases of serious injury or death involving police, regardless of any allegations of wrongdoing.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the IIO witness line at 1-855-446-8477.
