Global Outrage Over Israeli Soldier's Desecration of Crucifix in Southern Lebanon
A disturbing photograph depicting an Israeli soldier using the blunt side of an axe to smash a fallen sculpture of Jesus on the cross in a southern Lebanese village has ignited widespread condemnation from Israeli authorities, the United States, and Christian leaders worldwide. The image, which emerged online over the weekend, shows the desecration of a crucifix in Debel, a village in southern Lebanon with a Christian population.
Verification and Location of the Incident
Reuters has verified that the location of the image is indeed Debel, one of the few villages in southern Lebanon where residents remained during an Israeli military campaign against the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia. This campaign began on March 2 after Hezbollah fired rockets at Israel in support of Iran. The cross was part of a small shrine in the garden of a family living on the edge of the village, according to Fadi Falfel, a priest in Debel.
"One of the Israeli soldiers broke the cross and did this horrible thing, this desecration of our holy symbols," Falfel stated, expressing the deep offense felt by the local Christian community.
Condemnation from Religious and Political Leaders
The Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries of the Holy Land, which includes Jerusalem's Catholic Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, issued a strong statement condemning the act. They described it as "a grave affront to the Christian faith" and highlighted "a disturbing failure in moral and human formation, wherein even the most elementary reverence for the sacred and for the dignity of others has been gravely compromised."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded swiftly, expressing his shock and sadness over the incident. He emphasized that the soldier's actions contradicted Jewish values of tolerance and assured that the soldier would face punishment. "I was stunned and saddened to learn that an IDF soldier damaged a Catholic religious icon in southern Lebanon. I condemn the act in the strongest terms," Netanyahu wrote on X.
International Reactions and Apologies
U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee echoed the call for accountability, stating on X that "Swift, severe, & public consequences are needed." Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar also condemned the actions, calling them disgraceful and shameful. "We apologize for this incident and to every Christian whose feelings were hurt," Saar said on X, offering a formal apology on behalf of the Israeli government.
The photo was originally posted by Younis Tirawi, a Palestinian reporter known for sharing images of apparent misconduct by Israeli soldiers in Gaza. This incident has further strained tensions in the region, highlighting the sensitive nature of religious symbols during military conflicts.
