A group of former senior Canadian diplomats is urging the federal government to impose what they describe as 'robust' sanctions on Israel in response to its ongoing military operations in Gaza. In an open letter released on Wednesday, the former diplomats argue that Canada must take a stronger stance to uphold international law and human rights.
Sanctions Call Details
The letter, signed by more than a dozen former ambassadors and senior officials, calls on Prime Minister Mark Carney's government to halt all arms exports to Israel, impose economic sanctions, and support an immediate ceasefire. The signatories include former ambassadors to the United Nations, the Middle East, and other key posts.
'Canada must act decisively to end the bloodshed and hold all parties accountable for violations of international law,' the letter states. 'Robust sanctions are a necessary step to demonstrate that Canada will not be complicit in actions that constitute war crimes.'
Government Response
In response, a spokesperson for Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly said the government is reviewing the letter but did not commit to any specific measures. 'Canada remains deeply concerned about the situation in Gaza and continues to call for a ceasefire and the protection of civilians,' the spokesperson said.
The call for sanctions comes as the death toll in Gaza surpasses 35,000, according to Palestinian health officials, and as international pressure mounts on Israel to halt its offensive. The International Court of Justice is currently investigating allegations of genocide against Israel, which it denies.
Political Reactions
The letter has drawn mixed reactions from Canadian politicians. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh expressed support for the call, saying Canada must 'stand on the right side of history.' Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, however, criticized the proposal, arguing it undermines Israel's right to self-defense.
The former diplomats' appeal adds to growing domestic pressure on the Liberal government to take a tougher line on Israel, including from within its own caucus. Several Liberal MPs have publicly called for sanctions and an arms embargo.
As the conflict continues, the debate over Canada's role and responsibilities in the Middle East is likely to intensify, with the government facing increasing calls to act.
