A leading medical analyst and former vice-presidential physician has issued a stark call for a formal congressional investigation into the fitness of President Donald Trump, citing a recent diplomatic letter as a primary cause for concern.
Cardiologist Points to Nobel Prize Letter
Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a CNN medical analyst who once served as cardiologist to the late Vice President Dick Cheney, made the demand on Monday. He specifically pointed to a letter Trump recently sent to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
In that correspondence, Trump appeared to connect his escalating public rhetoric about the United States seizing Greenland to his failure to win the Nobel Peace Prize last year. The president also directed the letter to be distributed to other European nations, a fact Reiner highlighted as particularly troubling.
Public Call for a Bipartisan Inquiry
"This letter, and the fact that the president directed that it be distributed to other European countries, should trigger a bipartisan congressional inquiry into presidential fitness," Reiner wrote on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, on January 19, 2026.
Reiner's public statement frames the letter not as a simple diplomatic misstep, but as potential evidence warranting a formal examination by lawmakers from both major political parties.
Growing Scrutiny Over Health and Acuity
This call for a congressional probe comes just days after Reiner publicly urged President Trump to undergo further medical evaluation. This followed another incident where Trump was seen nodding off during a public event, adding to months of increasing scrutiny over his health and mental sharpness.
"The president seems to be struggling with excessive daytime somnolence," Reiner noted in a separate post on X. "Repeatedly falling asleep with a dozen people surrounding your desk is not normal. It needs to be evaluated."
The combination of these public episodes and the content of the diplomatic letter has led a respected figure in medical and political circles to question the president's capacity to execute the duties of his office, prompting an unprecedented public appeal for legislative oversight.
