Canadian activists who were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla and subsequently deported from Israel have arrived in Turkiye, Defence Minister Anita Anand confirmed on Thursday. The flotilla, which aimed to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza, was intercepted by Israeli authorities earlier this week.
Arrival in Istanbul
The activists landed at Istanbul Airport on Thursday morning, where they were greeted by Turkish officials and representatives from the Canadian embassy. Emotional scenes unfolded as the group reunited after their detention and deportation. Photographs from the airport showed activists embracing each other upon arrival.
Government Response
Minister Anand stated that the Canadian government had been working diligently to ensure the safe return of its citizens. We are relieved that the Canadian members of the flotilla are now safe in Turkiye and will be returning home soon, she said. The government continues to monitor the situation closely.
The flotilla, organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, included ships carrying humanitarian aid for Gaza. Israel has maintained a naval blockade on the Gaza Strip since 2007, citing security concerns. International activists have periodically attempted to break the blockade, leading to confrontations with Israeli forces.
Canadian officials have not commented on the specifics of the deportation process but emphasized that consular services were provided to those detained. The activists are expected to return to Canada in the coming days.
